After a first season full of twists and crazyness, The Oval, the
#1 new scripted series on cable last season, will be back for a
second season this week on BET (season premiere on February 16th).
For the occasion, Daniel Croix Henderson, who plays Jason, the son of
the presidential couple, aggreed to answer to some of my questions
about those new episodes and his character.
1. How did you get the role of Jason in The Oval?
It was so crazy! I was fresh out of acting school, living in a
cramped apartment in Harlem, soaking up all the theatre, art, and
music I could in the city. I was rehearsing for Shakespeare in
the Park, when my agent sent me the audition for The Oval. I
auditioned on tape in New York, and the next week I was flown to
Atlanta to audition for Tyler Perry and the producers.
In Atlanta, I was led into a conference room with about ten other
actors. We were so nervous. After what felt like an eternity, Tyler
Perry walked in and announced: “Welcome to the cast of The Oval!”
Paige was in tears. Kron was flipping out. Ed was chill, but
I’m sure he was full of joy. It was like a reality show. I remember
thinking “This is a life-changing moment.” I’ll never forget
it.
2. What do you like about playing this role?
Every time Jason appears, there’s no way to predict what
he’ll bring to the table. He’s a total wild card, and there don’t
seem to be limits on where Tyler Perry will go with the writing.
I hope that the horrific acts of the Franklin family encourage people
to think long and hard about who we’re inviting into real
government positions - and to get out and vote!
3. Jason can be pretty creepy. How did you prepare to play this
role?
I had to figure out what causes him to act in such egregious
ways - what makes him tick. Jason is a warning of what can
happen when power goes unchecked. His actions are the result of a
deadly combination: unlimited power, normalized misogyny, and
childhood trauma. A lot of preparation went into clarifying his
history and asking questions about how people end up like him.
4. The season 1 ended in a tragic way for him. What can we
expect in the season 2?
We pick right up where we left off - and it only gets crazier. Our
cast found a new groove in the second season - a lot of fun and
spontaneous moments happened on set. I can’t wait to see how those
come through the show.
5. I love the show, I never get bored, there are a lot of twists
and so many crazy things happen. Will the season 2 keep give us
that?
The second season turns everything up a notch! I promise that it
gets even more dramatic.
6.What do you like the most about being in this show?
I love our fans. We have so much fun, especially on Twitter as the
show is airing live. I also love working in a gigantic replica of the
White House. Every time I step into that building I’m humbled -
it’s remarkable.
7.The Oval was the #1 new scripted series on cable last year.
How did you feel when you learnt that?
I couldn’t believe it. It’s a huge tenement to Tyler Perry’s
following and the loyalty of his fans. So many people who roll with
our show grew up watching his plays.
8. It was one of the first tv shows to go back on set during the
pandemic. How did the shooting of season 2 go?
I’m so grateful for Tyler Perry, Mark Swinton, and Michelle
Sneed for coordinating an extremely safe and smooth set through the
pandemic. Our whole cast and crew was quarantined at the studio for
the entirety of the shoot. We tested for coronavirus several times a
week, and because we were so safe - we had an amazing time. When we
weren’t on set - there were food trucks, movies projected on the
lawn, and exercise classes. It was more like a summer camp than a
film studio!
9. Besides The Oval, do you have any other projects?
Yes! I’m excited to share that I’ll be recurring in the next
season of “Love, Victor” on Hulu. It’s a spinoff of the
film Love, Simon, and a coming-of-age story about a young man coming
to terms with his sexuality, and I had an amazing time working with
the cast and crew. The show is so funny and so real - I highly
recommend binging the first season before the next one airs!
10. What are some of your favorite TV shows?
I can’t speak enough on how much I loved Michaela Coel's “I
May Destroy You.” She really put her soul into that show. I’m
also such a fan of “Ramy,” “Black Mirror”, and of Terence
Nance’s “Random Acts of Flyness.” All such different shows -
but each one of them has a distinct voice and point-of-view. The
creators all take vulnerable and brave creative risks.
11.Do you have some words for your fans?
I’m just so grateful for your support. This year has been
exhausting for a myriad of reasons, and I hope that the TV shows I’m
a part of help you in some way to get through.
As we reimagine a world of greater equality and justice for the
future, we have to make sure we’re coming from a place that’s
centered - so I hope that you’re prioritizing your health and
well-being. I know that for me, that takes effort every day -
but it frees me to follow my dream of being a part of creating a more
diverse and inclusive Hollywood.

Après une première saison totalement folle et pleine de
rebondissements, The Oval, nouveauté numéro 1 sur le cable la
saison dernière, sera de retour pour une deuxième saison cette
semaine sur BET (début de saison le 16 février). Pour l’occasion,
Daniel Croix Henderson, l’interprète de Jason, le fils du couple
présidentiel, a accepté de répondre à mes questions sur ces
nouveaux épisodes et sur son personnage.
1.Comment avez-vous obtenu le rôle de Jason dans The Oval?
C’était tellement fou! Je venais de sortir de l’ecole d’art
dramatique, je vivais dans un appartement étroit à Harlem,
m’inpregnant de tout le théâtre, l’art, et la musique que je
pouvais dans la ville. Je répétais pour Shakespeare in the
Park, quand mon agent m’a envoyé l’audition pour The Oval. J’ai
auditionné par vidéo à New York, et la semaine suivante je pris
l’avion direction Atlanta pour auditionner pour Tyler Perry et les
producteurs.
À Atlanta, j’ai été conduit dans une salle de conférence
avec à peu près dix autres acteurs. Nous étions tellement nerveux.
Après ce qui semblait être une éternité, Tyler Perry est arrivé
et à annoncé : “Bienvenue dans le cast de The Oval!” Paige
était en larmes. Kron était dingue. Ed était détendu, mais
je suis sur qu’il était rempli de joie. C’était comme une télé
réalité. Je me souviens m’être dit “C’est un moment qui
change la vie.” Je ne l’oublierai jamais.
2. Qu’aimez-vous dans le fait de jouer ce rôle?
À chaque fois que Jason apparaît, il n’y a pas moyen de
prédire ce qu’il va faire. Il est vraiment incertain, et il ne
semble pas y avoir de limite avec la direction dans laquelle ira
Tyler Perry dans l’écriture. J’espère que les actes
horribles de la famille Franklin encourageront les gens à longuement
réfléchir sur qui nous invitons réellement dans notre gouvernement
- et de sortir et voter!
3. Jason peut être un peu effrayant. Comment vous-êtes vous
préparé pour jouer ce rôle ?
J'ai du comprendre à cause de quoi il agit de façons aussi
odieuses – qu'est ce qui le motive. Jason est un avertissement de
ce qu'il peut se produite quand le pouvoir n'est pas controlé. Ses
actions sont le résultat d'une combinaison mortelle : pouvoir
illimité, mysogynie normalisée and enfance traumatisante. Beaucoup
de préparation a été nécéssaire pour clarifier son histoire et
poser des questions à propos de personnes qui ont fini comme lui.
4. La saison 1 s'est terminée de façon tragique pour lui. A
quoi peut-on s'attendre dans la saison 2?
Nous reprenons exactement là ou nous nous sommes arrêtés –
et c'est encore plus fou. Notre cast a trouvé une nouvelle routine
dans la seconde saison - beaucoup de moments funs et spontanés ont
eu lieu sur le tournage. J'ai hâte de voir comment ces moments se
ressentent dans la série.
5. J'adore la série, je ne m'ennui jamais, il y a plein de
twists et tellement de choses folles se passent. La saison 2
va-t-elle continuer de nous donner ça ?
Dans la seconde saison, tout augmente d'un cran. Je promet que
ça devient encore plus dramatique.
6. Qu'aimez- vous le plus dans le fait d'être dans la série ?
J'aime nos fans. Nous nous amusons tellement, en particulier sur
Twitter lorsque la série est diffusée en live. J'aime aussi
travailler dans une réplique gigantesque de la Maison Blanche. A
chaque fois que j'entre dans ce batiment je suis touché – c'est
remarquable.
7. The Oval était la nouveauté numéro 1 sur le cable l'année
dernière. Comment vous êtes-vous senti quand vous avez appris ça ?
Je n'y croyais pas. C'est un énorme arguement pour les
disciples de Tyler Perry et la loyauté de ses fans. Tellement de personnes qui suivent notre série ont grandi en regardant ses
pièces de théatre.
8. C'était l'une des premières séries à retourner sur les
plateaux de tournage pendant la pandémie. Comment s'est passé le
tournage de la saison 2 ?
Je suis tellement reconnaissant envers Tyler Perry, Mark Swinton
et Michelle Sneed d'avoir mis en place un plateau de tournage
extremement sécurisé et sans faille pendant la pandémie. Tout
notre cast et notre équipe étaient en quarantaine au studio
pendant l'intégralité du tournage. Nous étions testé pour le
coronavirus plusieurs fois par semaine, et parce que nous étions en
sécurité, nous avons passé un très bon moment. Quand nous
n'étions pas en tournage, il y avait des food trucks, des
projection de films sur la pelouse et des cours de sport. C'était
plus comme un camp de vacances qu'un studio de tournage !
9. A part The Oval, avez-vous d'autres projets ?
Oui ! Je suis excité de partager que je serais récurrent
dans la prochaine saison de Love, Victor, sur Hulu. C'est un spin
off du film Love, Simon, et une histoire sur le passage à l'âge
adulte d'un jeune homme acceptant sa sexualité, j'ai passé un
excellent moment à travailler avec le cast et l'équipe. La série
est tellement drôle et réélle, je recommande vraiment de binge
watcher la première saison avant que la suivante ne soit diffusée.
10. Quelles sont tes séries favorites ?
Je ne peux pas assez dire à quel point j'ai aimé I May Destroy
You de Michaela Coel. Elle a vraiment mis son âme dans cette série.
Je suis aussi très fan de Ramy, Black Mirror, et de Random Acts of
Flyness de Terence Nance. Ce sont toutes des séries
différentes, mais chacune d'entre elles à son point de vue. Les
créateurs ont tous pris des risques créatifs vulnérable et
courageux.
11. Avez-vous quelques mots pour vos fans ?
Je suis juste tellement reconnaissant de votre soutient. Cette
année a été fatiguante pour d'innombrables raisons, et j'espere
que les séries dont je fais parti vous aide d'une manière ou d'une
autre à faire face.
Alors que nous réimaginons un monde plus égale et plus juste
pour le futur, nous devons être certain d'être centré – donc
j'espere que vous priorisez votre santé et votre bien être. Je sais
que pour moi, il faut faire des effort chaque jour, mais ça me
libère pour poursuivre mon rêve de faire parti de la création d'un
Hollywood plus inclusif et diversifié.
